Chapter 23

Chapter 23

Samsus wasn’t the least bit surprised Katrina had been keeping things from him. She didn’t trust anybody, not even the people she dealt with. It was as if Katrina expected betrayal. As if she wanted it. Samsus wasn’t sure what event in her past had made her like this. He didn’t even know enough about Katrina to know if it had been one event or several. All Samsus knew for sure was he wasn’t surprised by anything Katrina did anymore.

He also couldn’t say he wasn’t apprehensive about inviting Captain Kitten Retrieve onboard. He was. He more than was. To say Samsus was just apprehensive would be an understatement. He was terrified, especially at the thought of what she might find out. What any of them might find out. That was why Samsus had to hide the Caren Bo. A part of him felt a little foolish for hiding them. Kitten had scanned the Alicia; she knew exactly what Tri-Breds were still alive onboard. She also knew how many of the Freighter crew had boarded and that gave Kitten an advantage over Samsus. But just because she knew what was onboard didn’t mean she knew…

Samsus approached the docking bay and nerves caused him to ring his hands. It was a bad habit he’d been scolded for growing up. He’d been told it wasn’t something normal people did, not to the extent Samsus seemed to anyway. He’d worked hard to break himself of the habit and hated himself for starting it again now. Samsus clenched his hands together then pulled them apart. He couldn’t let Kitten or her crew see him so nervous. He couldn’t let anyone start to think…

He wasn’t sure what it was they would think. Samsus knew from experience they would draw all the wrong connections because people preferred things not to conflict with their expected preconceptions. They liked things to be straight forward and simple. They liked things to be predictable and normal. But in doing so they always made the wrong assumptions. Just for once Samsus wished they would figure out the truth. Maybe it was crazy of him to think like that, but it was true.

The docking hatch doors opened and Kitten lumbered through the gap. She was dressed in a blue PVC jacket, a light blue shirt, blue trousers and black boots. It was the first time Samsus had seen the Garden’s Military Elite uniform up close and it sent a cold shiver down his spine. Kitten’s reputation was threatening enough on its own; to know she had the full support of the Atrixcian government behind her too just made her that much worse.

Samsus was half surprised to find she was alone. For a moment he glanced behind her just to be sure he hadn’t missed something, but there was really no one else there. As the doors swished closed Samsus couldn’t help but frown.

‘Just you?’

‘What do you mean just me?’ Kitten folded her arms. ‘What were you expecting?’

‘I thought you were bringing a whole search team onboard.
